Day 10: A Dogan Mask Dance
We slept on the roof of a "hotel". 2 girls spent hours bringing buckets of water so that all the tourists could have a nice cold shower. How would you like to have a job like that?
If you look closely, you will see a tortoise backed in under the bush. They are considered good luck.
This is a picture of one of the few Christian churches we saw while there. Most of the country is Muslim or Animist.

All of the holes in the cliff are houses for the Tellum people that I talked about earlier. This shows how high the houses were.
These crocodiles have a pond in one of the villages. There is a legend about the Dogan needing water and being led to water by these crocodiles. They are considered good luck and a blessing to the village.
In the village we spent the night in (I can't remember the name) they did their traditional mask dance for us. It was amazing. Some of the masks were 8 feet tall! They have masks representing all different kinds of animals, chief, women and hunters. The dance lasted about a half hour.
That night, as we settle into our comfortable roof, we heard drums and singing. Toby, Daniel and I decided to go investigate. We grabbed our flashlights and started walking through the village hoping that we weren't accidentally walking into a secret meeting. Turns out it was just the teenagers having a good time. It appeared to be their way of hanging out. They formed a circle and different people would go in the middle and dance. Toby and Daniel tried to blend their voices with the singing, but not knowing the language kind of made them stand out and I almost got dragged into the dancing a couple times but luckily got out of it.

I wished you had danced...think about how cool that memory would be! Oh...never mind, you have plenty of cool memories from this trip already. I love all the pictures.
